Whether you are just starting out with your musical journey or have been playing for a long time, having the right sound flowing from your saxophone is a critical part of even having an instrument. When you play and it doesn’t sound the way you wanted, it can be discouraging and maybe the reason you become unmotivated to practice as often as you should or quit altogether. Fortunately, there are a wide variety of mouthpieces available for you to choose from, so this shouldn’t be a determining factor on whether or not you allow yourself to enjoy the saxophone.
Why the Mouthpiece Matters
There are different types of mouthpieces you can pick from. Though plastic is most often used with beginners because not only is it affordable, but also very durable, it may not quite have the sound you are hoping for. Don’t let this discourage you, however, because as you get better and more confident with your skill, you can advance the mouthpiece to obtain a richer, more delightful sound that is probably more like what you were hoping for.
Hard rubber mouthpieces are more common with jazz and classical performers, but crystal mouthpieces are also good with jazz musicians because it allows for the element of projection. They can be quite fragile, though, so ensure you keep it wrapped up securely when it is not in use to keep it protected. Wood is also a known material for the saxophone mouthpiece, but isn’t very common since it can wear down quicker than other materials. However, it still creates a great sound depending on the style you are looking for. Some may prefer metal due to a nice projection and bright sound.
The best way to decide on the type of mouthpiece you would like is to imagine in your head what sort of sound you are hoping to produce. It may be a good idea to bring a friend along to help you choose when selecting the mouthpiece. Many reputable sellers offer return policies because they understand that sometimes, the mouthpiece you originally select may not turn out to be the one you hoped for when you purchased it.
Having the right mouthpiece for your saxophone can mean the difference between finding a way to express yourself accurately through music and potentially giving up an instrument you enjoy just because you don’t sound like your favorite musician. Even with their setup, you may find one with no similarities that helps you to discover your unique style.
