When we think of famous saxophonists, the first artists to come to mind might be Kenny G, David Sanborn, Grover Washington, or Charlie Parker. Kenny G is well-known for his versatility when it comes to the instrument, including expertise in the soprano, alto, and tenor saxophones. Charlie Parker was more specialized in the alto sax but has a sound that leaves an indelible imprint. There are more modern talents, such as David Koz with his unique style, but still, quite popular genres, that most people can easily draw inspiration from. Whoever motivates you to pick up a saxophone and start playing, we want to ensure you can get the sound you want.
Why Size Matters: Measuring The Opening
The mouthpiece is especially important when it comes to creating the tone you want with an instrument. Depending on the material of the mouthpiece, your musical range can vary. If you have a particular artist you want to sound like, this is how you will be able to determine how close you can come to emulating them. Though beginners may feel inclined to use a hard rubber mouthpiece until they are ready to transition to something like a metal mouthpiece, they can still get a feel for what they will eventually sound like with practice.
The mouthpiece tip is where the reed meets the mouthpiece. How narrow the mouthpiece tip controls the type of music that you will make. Factors including the size of the saxophone and the mouthpiece material can also be important decisions when it comes to determining the size of the mouthpiece tip. What you may not know is that the size is significant right down to the last millimeter. Those who still measure in inches may discover that their music isn’t what they thought it would be. Even one-half millimeter off can make the difference between a clear sound and one that is muffled.
Once you understand how relevant the opening of your mouthpiece tip should be, it may make it easier for you to ask questions when deciding how best to pursue your interest. Knowing what you want your music to sound like is only part of the battle. How to get it and find someone who can help you to do it are also necessary factors when it comes to making the type of music you always wanted to create.
