How to Choose the Right Saxophone Mouthpiece

March 9, 2020

Over 54% of the households in the United States have one member of the family that plays a musical instrument. Playing a musical instrument is a great way to alleviate stress and do something creative. Choosing the right instrument to learn can be difficult, to say the least. If you are more interested in genres of music like jazz or even classical, learning how to play the saxophone may be a great choice.

The mouthpiece is one of the most important parts of a saxophone. If the mouthpiece is damaged or has a poor facing, you will be unable to get the smooth and spine-tingling sounds out of your saxophone. If you are in the market for a new saxophone mouthpiece, consider the helpful suggestions below.

Look at the Tip Opening

One of the main things you need to focus on when looking at saxophone mouthpieces is the tip opening. The size of the tip opening may depend on how much experience you have playing the saxophone. If you are relatively new to this instrument, then you may want to choose a mouthpiece with a smaller opening. Mouthpieces with smaller tip openings are usually more forgiving for beginners.

The only real way to figure out what size opening is the right fit for you is by trying a few out. While this will take some time and effort, it's worth it. Without the right mouthpiece, you will have a hard time enjoying your instrument. Consulting with an experienced saxophone mouthpiece maker or dealer is crucial when trying to avoid mistakes. They should have no problem offering some suggestions regarding what size mouthpiece opening you need to consider.

Consider The Baffle Shape

When trying to find the right mouthpiece, you will also need to consider the baffle shape. These baffles some in three types:

  • Step baffle
  • Flat baffle
  • Rollover baffle

The type of baffle you choose will depend on the type of sound you want to get out of the saxophone. If you want to give your sound a bit of an edge and brightness, then a rollover or step baffle is a great idea. If your main goal is to have a darker and more traditional sound, then a flat baffle is probably the best option. Trying out each of these baffles is important if you want to master your sound and make playing easier.

What Type of Reed Do You Use?

The next thing you need to consider before getting a new saxophone mouthpiece is what type of reeds you normally use. Saxophone reeds come in a number of sizes and types. Most saxophone players love the sound of a natural cane reed. Finding the right reed strength and mouthpiece tip opening will require some testing. Buying the first mouthpiece you come across can be a bad idea. It's a good idea to try out several mouthpieces before you invest the money.
