There is more to playing a saxophone than meets the ear. The mouthpiece and reed are where the sound from a saxophone begins. The reed is set into motion by breath, creating soundwaves and vibrations that travel through the mouthpiece and into the horn. It is an undeniable fact that the mouthpiece is the single most important piece of this instrument, as it is the first point of contact setting all else into motion.
The mouthpiece’s influence on the quality of sound that is generated through the saxophone is tremendous. For those just learning as well as seasoned professional saxophonists, choosing the right mouthpiece is the first step in performing your best.
Not all saxophone mouthpieces are created equal, but they definitely perform in their own unique way and create different tones, and depending on the genre of music to be played, more than one type is often needed. Understanding the differences between Traditional/Contemporary Jazz and Classical mouthpieces, and how these differences affect performance, is critical to any saxophonist’s ultimate success. And like any other integral part of an instrument, the quality, performance, and craftsmanship is of utmost importance.
Classical mouthpieces contain elements that produce a focused, pure sound. With their fairly closed tip openings and smaller chambers, it easier to blend with more mellow musical instruments such as the classical guitar and wind ensemble. If a saxophonist tends to lean to this style of playing, a classical mouthpiece will make producing rich and rounded tones much easier.
Traditional and Contemporary Jazz mouthpieces are somewhat the opposite to those made to produce the classical style. These mouthpieces tend to have a little more open tip, medium to higher baffles, and larger chambers, allowing more of the upper overtones and harmonics to shine through. This extra projection produces the traditional jazz, contemporary jazz, funk, fusion, and rock tones that can compete with amplified instruments and large brass sections of a band.
The variations in tones produced by the difference mouthpieces make finding just the right one a very personal choice. Knowing what you intend to play will go a long way in helping to make the best decision. For authentic sound that is true to the types of music intended to be played, it is often best to have several mouthpieces that provide the most options.
WestCoast Sax is a premier mouthpiece and accessory designer. We produce the type of quality, performance, and craftsmanship that will provide tones necessary for the highest caliber of saxophonist. Ideally, choosing one or more high quality mouthpieces will carry any saxophonist through many years of playing music. When it comes to playing a saxophone, the better the mouthpiece and reed selection, the better the results and playing experience will be. "Your Sound, Our Mission" Thanks for reading, Matt Lee
