In my personal opinion, not really, just different. This has been a debate for years, with no real scientific evidence that shows any significant difference when we are talking about Gold vs Silver vs Rhodium Plating etc. Plating is mainly cosmetic, if there is a difference tonally, it's minute. If we are talking about Solid Silver or Solid Gold, then I would say the difference would be more noticeable in terms of tone and resonance. I believe plating has a more noticeable effect on musical instruments (Ex: Saxophone and Trumpet) vs a saxophone mouthpiece, due to its overall larger size.
At the end of the day, if you feel a Silver Saxophone Mouthpiece is brighter than a Gold Mouthpiece, go with it. The mind is a very powerful thing. The debate of plating and finishes will go on for years to come. For more information go to Westcoast Sax.
Check out this interesting study on TMS, The Science of Sound. They compared a $3500 Silver Plated Flute to a $150,000 Solid Gold Flute with little effect on the sound. Thanks for reading, Matt Lee
