When it comes to playing the saxophone, you’ve got to have range. It’s something the pros know, and something that’s intuitive to many players. But it’s also something that is handy to keep in mind while you are learning how to optimize the results that you get out of your horn.
Of course, it can be hard to hit the altissimo register – there's quite a bit of fingering knowledge involved, and music theory to contend with. But there is also the value of having the right mouthpiece.
You can see from our testimonials on the site that trying out a new mouthpiece brings a lot of new experiences to beginners and seasoned professionals alike. It’s something that many players enjoy! And our specialty accessories are among the best. Just ask Jackiem Joyner whose “Soul Machine” sound is tops, or Boney James, as he works on his “roman a clef” if you’ll pardon the music pun…we have connections to lots of super-talented people who know a lot about tone! We do, too – that’s part of how we pick the products that will get those soaring strains and rich tones out of your horn. We know that quality is important – because you’ve spent a good deal of time and money to get proficient with this instrument – and you want to show off those achievements to the world!
High and Low Registers
One way to try out a mouthpiece is to experiment with a wide variety of sounds, and try moving from a high register to a low register, and vice versa. This is helpful, and it’s fun, too! Just ask the guys who hang around our practice rooms.
Some of the best arpeggiated results in music are based on these dizzying trips from a high precipice to a low ravine or chasm – and playing shrill, high notes next to bellowing low notes is a great way to put your mouthpiece through the traces and see what it's made of.
The pros like to use our products to create their signature sounds, and many of them have upcoming albums coming out showcasing particular styles. Again, as you build a signature style and sound, you’re partially using range, and that's where your mouthpiece can make a big difference. Take a look at what we have available at West Coast Sax, along with our testimonials and input from the pros. Then make your decisions about what to put in your kit or gig bag as you go from one stage to another. Go conquer!
