While all musicians may have off moments, saxophonists can sometimes get a bad rap for playing with poor sound quality or sounding out of tune. Saxophone sounds are multifaceted, intricate, and complex. A primary factor in saxophone sound is resonance, with poor resonance leading to unappealing sound quality.
What sets excellent saxophone sounds apart from beginner saxophone sounds is years of practice and a strong sense of musical expression. However, if you apply a few sound hacks to your daily practice routines, your saxophone sound can dramatically improve in a relatively short period.
One of the exercises that many great saxophonists use to gain resonance is overtones. When practicing overtones, a saxophonist fingers one note such as a B flat, low C, or B natural, then produces a different note, for instance, the fifth above that note or the octave above it.
By manipulating the overtone series, you can achieve an intended sound. Overtones are essential to saxophone sound as they act as stepping stones towards getting the incredibly high notes, or altissimo notes, on the instrument. Using overtones will also give you flexibility and strengthen your throat, which will also help your sound improve.
Even seasoned sax players must properly tongue notes to get a clean start to the note. Properly tongued notes begin with making sure you are not breath-starting and are instead actually putting your tongue against the bottom of the reed.
For example, if a big attack to the tone is desired, close the reed off entirely and allow the air pressure to build up behind the release. This technique produces a big and loud saxophone sound. And, if you instead achieve a slightly less aggressive attack, merely rest your tongue where it almost touches the tip of your reed to keep it from vibrating.
Like many instruments, the saxophone depends upon the intricacies of its parts to produce subtle and distinct differences in sounds. The saxophone’s mouthpiece is a vital part of its sound and the sound you can achieve as a saxophonist.
Handcrafted mouthpieces offer a variety of sound qualities and tones for your style of playing and provide the beginning mechanism to achieve your goals. Offering gorgeous tones, brilliance, clarity, warmth, and power, handcrafted saxophone mouthpieces designed for the multifaceted sounds of the saxophone will keep your sound on point every time you play your instrument. Improve your saxophone sound
