Practice Tips Designed To Help Beginner Saxophone Players

August 23, 2021

Over the years, multiple studies have found that musical education is beneficial for people of all ages. Finding an instrument that speaks to you may take some time and research. If you love the sultry and pleasing sounds of the saxophone, learning how to play this instrument is a good idea.  While you won’t become a world-class saxophonist overnight, you can get better at this instrument with some hard work and plenty of practice.

If you want to start becoming a better player, then you have to set aside time to practice. Below are some things you need to consider when attempting to get the most out of your saxophone practice sessions.

Start By Finding a Comfortable Neck Strap

Making the most out of your saxophone practice sessions will be much easier if you can stay comfortable. The main thing you need to make standing and playing saxophone more comfortable is a high-quality neck strap. The average neck strap that comes with most saxophones is usually uncomfortable. These neck straps are generally devoid of things like padding.

This is why you need to find a neck strap that has thick foam built into it. Luckily, there are tons of comfortable saxophone neck straps on the market that are very affordable. Ideally, you want to get a firsthand look at a neck strap before investing in it. As you inspect a neck strap, put it on your saxophone and get a feel for how well it fits. By doing this, you can avoid a case of buyer’s remorse in the future.

Understand the Value of a Quality Mouthpiece

When first starting out, most beginners have to buy a cheaper saxophone. Instead of being disappointed that you have to buy a lower-priced instrument, you need to find ways to make it sound and function better. One of the main things you can do to make your cheaper saxophone sound better is by upgrading the mouthpiece. Generally, cheaper saxophones are equipped with low-quality plastic mouthpieces.

Not only do you need a quality mouthpiece to upgrade the sound of your saxophone, you also need a good reed. If you are unsure about what type of reeds to purchase for your sax, consulting with the professionals at Westcoast Sax is a wise move. With their assistance, you can find all the parts and accessories needed to make your saxophone play better.

Use a Backing Track

Learning and practicing scales on your saxophone is a great way to start getting a feel for creating music. Finding a backing track to play to is crucial if you want to make this type of practice more helpful. Alternating between playing with and without backing tracks can help you train your ear to recognize certain notes and tones. Practicing with a backing track is also a great way to train yourself to play with other musicians in the future. Being smart about how you practice will make you a better musician.

If you need parts for your saxophone, the team at Westcoast Sax can assist you.
